Young people are an integral part of our
hostel, and programs directed especially to groups of young people have become an important part
of cultural exchange here. For example:

- A group of students from LaSalle University planned an Alternative Spring Break stay at HI-Boston. Their goal was to perform community service and introduce the concept to other travelers. Program staff arranged for the group to enlist fellow hostellers to participate in their work at a local soup kitchen.
- A visiting student group from Vermont met other hostellers and made new friends during an ice cream social planned by HI-Boston.
- HI-Boston helped a group of students from the Pittsfield Youth Workshop in New Hampshire meet students from the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club. The Pittsfield group's goal was to brainstorm ideas for a new teen center in N.H. In addition to making new friends and observing a successful teen center, the group also took a historic walking tour of the Back Bay and visited the John Hancock Tower Observatory.
- In addition to sightseeing in Boston, a group of students from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland worked with HI-Boston staff on team building initiatives and experiential education activities. This prepared them for a group presentation to the Irish-American Network and increased cross-cultural and cross-border understanding among the students.
- Several teachers at The Mary E. Curley Middle School collaborated with HI-Boston staff to create a three dimensional initiative that included interactive activities with other hostellers, an environmental survey of the Boston hostel, and a visit to the New England Aquarium.

Programs for groups can be designed to meet the focus of your groups' visit. If you are interested in history, HI-Boston can organize volunteers to show you the Freedom Trail or Faneuil Hall. Other volunteers can introduce your groups to Boston's diverse neighborhoods, including Beacon Hill, the Back Bay, Chinatown or Harvard Square.
If your group is looking to experience the excitement and culture that Boston has to offer, HI-Boston can arrange visits to the Museum of Fine Arts, cultural festivals, or sporting events with the Boston Red Sox or Celtics. Many opportunities for programs exist at the hostel itself, including cultural dinners or coffeehouses with a variety of local musicians.
All programs at HI-Boston are planned and carried out with the purpose of meeting our mission: "To help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling."
