Hostelling International USA is pleased to announce that its 2015 Y.O.U.T.H. Travel Scholarships application is now available for nonprofits, schools and other youth-serving organizations in the Boston area. Y.O.U.T.H. stands for Youth Opportunities Unlimited Through Hostelling, which has come to reflect HI USA’s steadfast belief that travel through hostelling expands the horizons and possibilities for young people. Over the last 5 years, HI USA has awarded the scholarship to over twenty different youth-serving organizations in the Boston area, helping to positively transform the lives of hundreds of participants.

Since 1934, Hostelling International USA has stressed the notion that you have to see the world to understand it. HI USA achieves its central mission through a variety of programs and activities that aim to inspire a genuine understanding of peoples, places and cultures for a more tolerant world. These programs include activities that range from travel education courses to specialized experiences in our local communities. The YOUTH Travel Scholarship is one of HI USA’s central programs, which sponsors summer travel for youth ages 12-18 in the Greater Boston Area.

Our YOUTH Travel Scholarships program enables youth from underserved communities to experience another community and place far different from their own. In all locations, groups can take advantage of the rich history, environment, and cultural activities that Martha’s Vineyard, Hyannis and Truro have to offer. HI USA donates the overnights at participating hostels, subsidizes additional travel costs, and partners with local environmental and educational organizations in the Cape Cod area to provide free programming to selected groups.

This year, HI USA has restructured the nature of the scholarship to provide a more immersive and generous experience for groups. The 2015 scholarship will cover an overwhelming cost of transportation, accommodations, and food, and also provide free experiential activities for groups. In addition, groups will have the opportunity to apply not only for a specific hostel, but an experiential package that can allow for community service in Hyannis, sustainability in Martha’s Vineyard, or backpacking from one hostel to another hostel. Finally selected groups will receive pre, during and post-trip support from HI USA staff, providing preparation prior to the trip and activities facilitation during the trip.
