“The HUB of Boston” The Campaign for a New HI-Boston
Building the new HI-Boston has been an exciting and challenging project that has required fundraising through a capital campaign. Opportunities to create and renew relationships with a multitude of “friends of hostelling” continue to result from these efforts, and have been enormously enriching for our organization.
Funding to build the new HI-Boston has come from diverse sources that include private financing, owner equity, and Historic and New Market Tax Credits. The capital campaign was launched to raise the balance needed to fill a remaining funding gap. Corporate and individual gifts and a signature annual event, the Get Away Gala, provide many opportunities to support the campaign.
“To help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling.”
Donors and campaign sponsors are invited to name a space at the new hostel with a minimum gift of $500, and may pledge their gifts over time. To date we have named the Ruth and Bill Nelson Dining Room, the Ben and Roselyn Olken Library, and the Paige and Pierce Azuma Game Room. We have had several other contributors who have sponsored dorm and private rooms, and some have even chosen to inscribe a wall panel on the central monumental staircase. Similar opportunities are still available.
Donors cite diverse reasons for supporting the new HI-Boston including a passion for the HI mission, the opportunity to honor or celebrate a colleague or loved one, and the importance of “sending a message” to a new generation of hostellers.
