Volunteer Opportunities
Social Outing Leaders
These individuals lead hostellers on social outings, helping
them enjoy Boston and meet one another. Activities include trips
to Harvard Square, Quincy Market, and other Boston hot spots.
They include visits to area restaurants and cafes, comedy clubs,
billiard halls, and the Landsdowne St. clubs. During the sports
seasons, trips to Red Sox and Celtics games are frequent events.
Volunteers may also suggest outings to their own favorite social
venues. Knowledge of the destination and a desire to interact
with international travelers are the skills needed for this
position. Apply.
Cultural Trip Leaders
These volunteers lead hostellers to area museums, concerts,
dance performances, poetry slams, or art festivals. Volunteers
can choose their favorite kinds of music, dance, or art to share
with visitors, helping them take advantage of Boston's many
free and cheap cultural institutions and events. No particular
expertise in the art form is necessary for this position, but
obviously an appreciation of it will help everyone enjoy the
trip better. A desire to meet and interact with people from
other parts of the world is a prerequisite. Apply.
Outdoor Outing Leaders
Much like the other outing leaders, these volunteers help hostellers
get to know the Boston area and meet one another. The difference
is that the focus is also on enjoying the outdoor world. Volunteers
take people out to see the city or the area parks for walking
tours, hikes, roller blading, bike riding, or cross-country
skiing. People skills and confidence in any sport involved are
important, as is an ability to be responsible about any risks
involved with the activity. Apply
.
Information Desk
The hostel front desk is often too busy attending to guests
who need to check in and out to also be able to assist others
with general questions about the area. The volunteer-run information
desk exists to fulfill this need. Volunteers answer simple questions
about getting around the area, give advice on what to see or
do, and help guests find resources to answer the questions they
themselves don't know the answers for. A general knowledge of
the Boston area is helpful. Shifts are two hours and can be
done on a weekly or biweekly basis. Apply.
Any questions, please contact
